Der südafrikanische Gitarrist, Sänger und Tänzer Johnny Clegg

Viele nennen ihn den "weißen Zulu". Der Brite Johnny Clegg kam zweijährig nach Afrika. Mit 14 lernte er von dem Straßenmusiker Charlie Mzile traditionelle Zulu-Tänze und die afrikanische Gitarre zu spielen. Im Alter von 16 Jahren schloss er sich mit Sipho Mchunu zusammen. Der weiße und der schwarze Zulu spielten zusammen auf der Straße und in privaten Venues, ständig in Gefahr im Gefängnis zu landen, da die Apartheid solche Verbrüderungen strikt verbot. Erst sieben Jahre später konnten sie eine Platte aufnehmen und gründeten die Band Juluka.

Zehn Jahre blieben sie zusammen, dann spielte Johnny Clegg von 1986 bis 1995 mit Savuka (4 CDs) und ab 1996 kurzzeitig wiederum mit Juluka (1997 "Crocodile Love"). 2002 kam Cleggs erstes Solo-Album heraus: "New World Survivor". 2003 eine neue Live-CD "A South African Story", seine gleichnamige Bühnenshow (SA) sowie ein DVD-Kompilation von Johnny Clegg/Savuka/Juluka-Videos und Liveauftritte. Gemeinsam mit Weltstars trat er beim Aids-Konzert 46664 in 2003 auf (Wiederholungskonzert 2005), produzierte 2006/2007 2 DVDs ('Live At Nelson Mandela Theatre' + 'My Favourite Zulu Guitar Songs'), sowie eine CD ('One Life').
Aktuell ist das neue Album "Human" (2010) und 2012 wieder auf durch nach Australien, U.S.A. und Europa!

In seiner Heimat Südafrika zählt er neben Miriam Makeba und Johnny Clegg zu den populärsten Musikern überhaupt. Vor den Augen zweier seiner sieben Kinder wurde Lucky Dube am Abend des 18. Oktober 2007 in Johannesburg auf offener Straße erschossen. Der Raubüberfall zielte auf das Auto und das Geld eines Musikers, der sich Zeit seines Lebens nichts aus materialistischen Dingen gemacht hatte.

The long-awaited Tribal Beatz album, produced by Robin Hogarth (Soweto Gospel Choir) and featuring the Johnny Clegg Band, will be on the shelves in the UK and shipping worldwide through ARC Music, UK, as of 6 November, 2006. The album was mixed and edited at One Big Room by Ludwig Bouwer and assisted by Justin Smit. Meanwhile, work on the follow-up album, World Beatz (working title), has started at One Big Room Studios.
